Project Number: 2020-Z-0003 (2020-E-0003 & 2020-E-0004) - Retainer Assignments for Archaeology will include small Stage 1 - 3 assessments (i.e. Background Research & Property Inspection, Property Assessment, and Test Excavation to determine whether or not a site warrants a Stage 4 salvage excavation prior to constuction) and Stage 4 salvage excavations at the discretion of the Ministry's Regional Archaeologist(s).
Normally, Stage 1 - 3 archaeological assessments are carried out between Preliminary Design and Detailed Design with sufficient time available to undertake the assessment as either part of a TPM assignment or as a stand-alone assignment. However, occasionally a change is made to the Capital Construction Program, where a project that requires archaeological assessment is added too late in the excavation season to include in a TPM assignment.
Occasionally, deeply buried or very small archaeological sites are missed during Stage 2 or 3 assessment and come to light during construction. Such sites will require a rapid deployment of field crew and rapid removal of artifacts.
